Establishment of the State of Israel
On May 14, 1948, British mandate over Palestine ended and the state of Israel officially began. It passed a law to permit Jews to return. In 1949 alone 239,076 arrived; in 1950 109,405 and in 1951, 174,019. The U.N. General Assembly had voted on November 29, 1947, to divide Palestine into Jewish and Arab states to become effective upon the withdrawal of the British in 1949.
